1950-talet

”Rocken får sitt genombrott med Bill Haley´s Rock around the clock i filmen Vänd dem inte ryggen 1955. Rocken är något annat än jazz, dixieland och schlagers, en tuff och rebellisk musik som passar ungdomar som håller på att skaffa sig en egen identitet. Från jukeboxar och Radio Luxemburg hörs de nya idolerna Buddy Holly, Jerry Lee Lewis, Chuck Berry, Little Richard. 1957 och 1958 är rockens stora år i Sverige – Sveriges radio börjar med tonårsprogram, rockgalor arrangeras, varje ort med självaktning skall ha en egen rockkung. Det är skinnknuttarna, raggarna och den arbetande ungdomen som är rockmusikens främsta supporters. Elvis Presley är för dem den självskrivne idolen. Tommy eller Elvis, dixie eller knutte, det är ett viktigt ställningstagande 1958. Det är den klassiska motsättningen mellan studerande och arbetande ungdom, mellan läroverkselever och folkskolebarn.” (Stockholmsungdom. 1988.)

”Första gången han framträdde med eget band var på Nalen, på nyårsafton 1957. Via den spelningen fick han skivkontrakt hos bolaget Karusell, och han skivdebuterade i början av 1958 med EP:n Little Gerhard. Låten ”What You’ve Done To Me” på den skivan blev hans genombrott.
